The favorite thing that I studied in science this year was the Earth's layers. I loved studying the Earth's layers because I would have never known how thick they were. I never knew how many layers there were, nor did I know what their names were. I always thought that the layers were all made of magma but I now know that they are made of several types of material.

When I was studying the Earth's layers I learned that there are four different layers called the crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core. I also learned that the main materials that make up the Earth's crust are 46% oxygen, and the second material is 26% silicon. The rest of the layers are mainly made of silicon, magnesium, and iron. The thickness of the Earth's crust is 5 to 40 kilometers. The Earth’s mantle is around 1900 kilometers thick, the Earth's outer core is about 2200 kilometers thick, and the inner core is 1250 kilometers thick.

I can apply this knowledge to the real world because if I want to become an Earth scientist I have some back round knowledge to help me become one. If I am going to become an Earth scientist I will know how thick the Earth’s layers are, how many layers there are, and what the layers are made of. If I want to be a Paleontologist I need to know how thick the layers are to find out how deep dinosaur bones would be.
